Suicide rates in the United States have been slowly rising since the 1990’s with nearly 50,000 people taking their own lives since 2022, up 3% from the previous year. With work being the single place most people spend most of their time outside their home, employers have a role in suicide prevention, from workplace stress to mental health challenges.
Work can offer a protective shield against suicide as a source of personal satisfaction and meaning, interpersonal contacts, and financial security. However, when work is poorly organized or when workplace risks are not managed, the workplace can raise suicide risk in some people.
