Understanding Health Literacy

At Health Action Council, we meet with health care providers and discuss the need to improve provider interaction with patients. We often hear that patients who clearly communicate their symptoms and respond candidly to questions from the nurses and doctors without self-diagnosing have the best experience.   Their diagnosis is more accurate, the time with the medical team is very productive and the experience for them and all other patients improves.    Strong health literacy means better outcomes. And, employers have an important role to play.
